KENNEDY, JOHN F., President . Autograph letter signed ("Jack") to Mrs. Mead, Chelsea, Massachusetts, n.d. [c.1943]. 4 pages, folio, on United States Naval Hospital stationery, edges a bit browned. A rare war-date autograph letter signed. After Lieutenant Kennedy aggravated his previously injured back during the famous sinking of his navy torpedo boat, the PT-109, he was shipped to a naval hospital in the States where he remained for several weeks. This chatty letter was apparently written during his hospitalization: "First a brief report on conditions at Chelsea. We live a very rugged life here. Conditions are somewhat similar to a 15th century Dominican monastery -- up at six; wooden beds; male nurses. Physically it should be excellent for me, and spiritually I am all peace and Love -- and Love! I ran into Zeke on my way here. He was stopping at Boston...before proceeding to Old Westbury for some stick and ball...I [am not sure]...what they are going to do with me, which up to now is a naval secret...Before completing my report, I would like to mention the exceedingly pleasant spring season I have just passed. I hope you know how much I appreciated everything. Several particular highlights should be noted, the excellent cuisine, served at any hour, the luxurious equipment..., the attractive neighbors with their attractive facilities; the Mullers' pool, the Woods' records, the Von Stades' daughter, those rare steaks and that even rarer Meade hospitality..."
