A Journal of Travels from New-Hampshire to Caratuck, on the Continent of North-America.
London: Joseph Downing for Brab. Aylmer, 1706. Small 4to (212 x 165 mm). Crushed red morocco gilt by Zaehnsdorf. Condition : a fine, wide-margined copy; very light spotting to the front cover. Provenance : Philip Robinson (Sotheby’s London, 23 June 1988, lot 188). Arriving in Boston in June 1702, Keith began a two year tour through the colonies as a missionary of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, travelling as far south as Carolina. “Keith’s progress through the colonies caused a stir of religious controversy among dissenters, and his journal of his preaching journey is a valuable record of colonial religious life” (Streeter Sale). Included in the work is a listing of ten sermons given during the tour that he had published in America. A scarce boook, with only this copy and the Macclesfield one appearing at auction in the last twenty years. Alden & Landis 706/141; Church 827; Howes K33; Sabin 37199; Streeter Sale 817.
