Cosway-style binding in near-contemporary blue morocco gilt by Riviere and Son, each cover with inset original oval portrait miniatures of Madame du Maine and Madame du Chatelet, volume I, and Madame Tallien and Madame du Barry, volume II, each surrounded by an elaborate gilt design of scrolling stylised foliage, flower-heads, dots, etc., the simple outer borders of two fillets with large fleur-de-lys tool at each corner, spines in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and third, others with repeat design centred on a fleur-de-lys tool, gilt turn-ins, top edge gilt, the others uncut, (light scuffing to extremities, some discoloration to leather).
