Beschreibung:

Justin Koslowski (photographer) Canal Maritime de Suez Photographiés d'après nature. [1869] Oblong folio (306 x 408mm.), 32 albumen prints (each approximately 192 x 275mm., or the reverse), 2 forming a double-page panorama, all mounted on card, many signed, dated and captioned in the negative, pencil manuscript captions in French on the mount, letterpress list of the photographs at end, publisher's green morocco-backed blind embossed green cloth, upper cover titled in gilt, flat spine lettered in gilt, some light spotting, occasional minor surface wear to images or fading, some mounts chipped at edges, rebacked retaining original spine, binding somewhat cockled and rubbed A RARE ALBUM OF PHOTOGRAPHS ON THE CONSTRUCTION AND OPENING OF THE SUEZ CANAL, which appears to be Kozlowski's only known photographic work. The title comes from the upper cover and the photographs show the building of the canal from its early stages up to its opening ceremony on 18 November 1869. Kozlowski (fl.1860s) was a Polish refugee from France who had lived in La Rochelle between 1837 and 1847, but little else is known about him. Perez states "It is possible that he was hired by the engineer Stanislaw Janicki, who supervised the digging between Port Said and Ismailia, for which he hired some eighty Polish engineers. Most of Kozlowski's photographs are signed, dated and even captioned in the negative. They state that he was based in Port Said. There are no other biographical details available and research in Egypt did not produce any further information. The manner in which the photographs have been staged and groups arranged, suggests that Kozlowski was well acquainted with the other workers; it might be that his only role was to photograph the work in progress and the teams of workers... The final photograph is of ships saluting during the opening ceremony. Some of Kozlowski's photographs were used to illustrate articles about the canal in Le Monde Illustre as early as 1867. No further images by him after 1869 have been seen." LITERATURE: Cf. Nissan N. Perez, Focus East: Early Photography in the Near East 1839-1885, (New York, 1988)Condition reportCondition is described in the main body of the cataloguing, where appropriate The lot is sold in the condition it is in at the time of sale.
