JULIEN CLAUDE GALLAND Recueil des Rits et Cérémonies du Pelerinage de la Mecque, auquel on a joint divers Ecrits relatifs à la Religion, aux Sciences & aux Moeurs des Turcs . Amsterdam and Paris: Desaint and Saillant, 1754. 8° (160 x 100mm). Wood-engraved head- and tailpieces. (Without the half-title, some variable browning, the title more heavily and unevenly.) Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine, marbled endpapers (extremities rubbed, upper joint splitting). FIRST EDITION OF GALLAND ' S IMPORTANT WORK ON MECCA . Also published in German three years later, the work comprises five essays, including three translations from Arabic and Turkish authorities, and two eye-witness accounts, of Chios, dated 10 February 1747, and of Sultana Esma's marriage to the Governor of Silistria, Yakub Pasha. Galland, an interpreter in the Levant, was a nephew of Antoine Galland (1646-1715), the orientalist. Blackmer 643.
