JULIAN MARTIN (born 1969) Untitled (figure in red) 2019 pastel on paper 38 x 28cm OTHER NOTES: It's worth spending time with the work of accomplished artist Julian Martin. His work, described recently by Swiss-born US-based artist Nicolas Party as "graphic, sharply defined compositions based on still-life photography", is iconic. The vivid pastel on paper he creates is transcendent and, with their rich, velvety surfaces, make a distinctive visual statement. Deconstructing still imagery to create highly considered abstract compositions, he continues his lifelong dedication to exploring reinterpretation of form. Not titled 2019 is a strong example of recent figurative work, which is highly regarded and collected by art enthusiasts in the US, UK and Australia. Martin has a 30+ year career having worked at Arts Project since 1988 and has held numerous solo shows in Melbourne, including at Australian Galleries in 1995. In 1994, Martin was a finalist in the Moët & Chandon Travelling Fellowship. Recently, his work was selected by Nicolas Party for his self-titled exhibition Nicolas Party: Pastel, at The FLAG Art Foundation, New York. He has shown extensively in the US with Fleisher/Ollman Gallery and in group exhibitions including The Armory Show, Independent and Outsider Art Fair with Fleisher/Ollman in New York. He has work in significant collections including Frances Lehman Loeb Arts Center, Vassar College, New York, Museum of Everything in London, City of Melbourne, Monash University Museum of Art and National Gallery of Victoria (gifted by Stuart Purves), as well as private collections worldwide. He is represented by Fleisher/Ollman, Philadelphia and Arts Project Australia, Melbourne.
