Lot of 19 silver gelatin images, mostly 5.5 x 3.25 in. or smaller, each titled in ink and signed Tuell with her copyright; nine images with extensive notations on verso in Tuell's hand. Tuell (1886-1960) moved west accompanying her school teacher husband. Eventually settling at Lame Deer Agency, Montana, she became interested in photography, and began taking images of the Northern Cheyenne. She became a keen observer of Cheyenne culture, and because of her status as a woman, was allowed access to scenes of daily and ceremonial life usually considered off limits to whites. Her photographs of the Sun Dance, for example, record scenes that were fast-fading on the Northern Plains. This small clutch of images includes four scenes and characters associated with the Animal Dance; three of the Sun Dance; a fine image of American Horse who served as a mentor to Tuell and taught her the Cheyenne language; Lame Deer a 90 year old woman who had been captured by Miles and his troops at the time of the Lame Deer Massacre; images of various types of Cheyenne burials, papooses in beaded cradles and other scenes. Many of these images are illustrated in Aadland's 1996 biography of Tuell Women and Warriors of the Plains. Condition: Most in excellent condition, mounted in archival mats.
