Judaica] - LEONTIUS, Jacobus [= JUDAH LEON] - Libellus effigiei Templi Salomonis. Amsterdam, Marcus Levy (on Hebrew title: Judah ben Mordecai & Samuel ben Moses Halevi), 1640, 4to, old blindstamped calf (rubbed), [38] ff. (some minor soiling). Very good copy.
1st Hebrew trsl. , titled “Sefer Tavnit Hekhal”, of “Retrato del templo de Selomoh” (Middelburg 1642) by the Spanish Jew Judah Leon (Jacob Juda Leão, 1603-1675). It is a treatise on the exterior and interior of the Temple of Solomon. The work is dedicated to the governors of the Sephardic congregation Talmud Torah in Amsterdam. One of these was Michael Spinoza, father of the great philosopher Baruch Spinoza (who had a copy of this book in his library). Marcus Levy was one of the first independent Ashkenazic printers in Amsterdam, active 1648-1651. This is one of the - only - 4 books he printed (see STCN). Woodcut ornament on Latin title. Hebrew title printed within border of type ornaments. Old notes on flyleaf, verso of Latin title and on Hebrew title. Ref. Fuks (Hebrew typogr.) 266. Steinschneider (Bodleian) 5563/3. STCN (3).
