Alcala: por la viuda de Andres Sanches Ezpelita, 1618. Small 4° (201 x 144mm.). Engraved title with arms of Cardinal Gaspar de Borja by Diego de Astor one engraved plate. Three section titles with border of typographical ornaments, final privilege leaf. Some leaves slightly dampstained. Modern calf. FIRST EDITION of the collected works of St. John of the Cross, an important mystical poet, and founder of the Discalced Carmelites. He was an important figure in Carmelite reforms, for which he was for some time imprisoned; he worked closely with St. Teresa of Avila, being the spiritual director of her Convent of the Incarnation for five years.
