Signed lower right "Joža Uprka", artist's inscription in pencil on the reverse. This entirely unique painting without figurative staffage is by the excellent Czech painter Joža Uprka. He is primarily known as a painter of folklore themes and portraits of people in folk costumes. At the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries, he accented the ethnography of a region with which he was intimately familiar – Moravian Slovakia. The view through blooming peach trees to a golden field and hamlet with a small church is a work celebrating springtime and exuding peace and harmony. From his work with color and Impressionist technique one can recognize the lessons he learned in Paris in 1892 and 1893.
