JOYCE, James Augustine Aloysius (1882-1941) -- Henri MARTINIE (1897-1965). A gelatin silver photographic portrait of Joyce, Paris: [?1925], 222 x 160mm, on a paper mount, the mount signed and inscribed in the lower margin 'Au 19 rue de PENTHIEVRE a Paris HENRI MARTINIE' (image lightly faded, a few small marks, light superficial scratches). Framed and glazed. A FINE IMAGE OF JOYCE BY THE FRENCH AVANT-GARDE PORTRAITIST MARTINIE, SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER. Martinie was well known as a photographer in avant-garde Paris in the 1920s and 1930s and specialised in portraits of writers and artists. Typical of his photographic style is to frame the head tightly and to use the subject's eyes as the principal point of focus while employing a very short depth-of-field, as here, where Joyce's eyes are in clear focus but much of his face is not, creating a striking image of the writer.
