Huebsch, 1916.] Proof sheets of the half-title, list of books 'By the Same Writer' and title [i.e.pp.[i]-[iii]], printed on rectos only, 3 ll. (251 x 180mm). (Very lightly browned, a few small marks, a few short, skilfully-repaired marginal tears.) Later cloth case, gilt morocco lettering-piece. Provenance : George Robert Minkoff, Inc. (loosely-inserted bookseller's invoice dated 23 October 1986). PROOF SHEETS OF THE FIRST THREE PAGES OF THE FIRST EDITION OF A PORTRAIT , which was published in America by B.W. Huebsch in December 1916; the first English edition was published by The Egoist Press in February 1917, using the American sheets, as English printers would not print the work, believing that it could be actionable.
