JOYCE, James (1882-1941). Ulysses . Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1922.
JOYCE, James (1882-1941). Ulysses . Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1922. 4° (236 x 185mm). (Final blank slightly torn.) Original cobalt blue wrappers, with lettering in white on upper cover, uncut (rebacked in matching blue paper with very slight loss to the 'U' of Ulysses , some wear at edges and along folds of flaps), modern blue morocco-backed soldander case. FIRST EDITION, limited to 1000 copies, this number 781 of 750 copies on handmade paper. Following serialisation in the Little Review (USA), edited by Margaret Anderson and Jane Heap, between March 1918 and December 1920, Ulysses was published on 2 February 1922, Joyce's fortieth birthday. Within four days the print run of 1000 agreed with Sylvia Beach was fully subscribed, but confiscation accounted for some 400-500 copies in America. 'Apart from Joyce's governing theme -- the necessary place of love in human society -- an important factor was his steady adherence to the Homeric parallel, taking the simplified narrative in Charles Lamb's The Adventures of Ulysses, which he read as a child, as a template for a very modern novel ... Odysseus, not Christ (or any other hero), was the proper model for modern man: sceptical yet able, longing for home when away and aching to wander when at home; uxorious but open to erotic stimulus and female blandishment' (Bruce Stewart, ODNB). AN INTERNALLY CLEAN, FRESH COPY. Connolly, The Modern Movement 42; Slocum & Cahoon A17.
