Beschreibung:

JOYCE, JAMES. 1882-1941. Ulysses ... with an Introduction by Stuart Gilbert and Illustrations by Henry Matisse. New York: Limited Edition Club, 1935.
Large 4to. 6 etched plates by Matisse, 20 reproductions of Matisse's sketches printed on blue and yellow paper. Publisher's brown buckram with abstract design including Matisse's Nausicaa embossed in gold on the front cover, spine decorated in gilt, card slipcase, later custom clamshell box. Light browning and foxing, slipcase stained and slightly soiled.
Provenance: From the distinguished collection of Delmer and Mary Lou Daves.
LIMITED EDITION, number 840, ONE OF ONLY 250 COPIES SIGNED BY BOTH MATISSE AND JOYCE on the limitation page. Of a total edition of 1500 copies signed in pencil by Matisse, 250 randomly numbered copies were also signed in ink by Joyce. According to legend, Joyce stopped signing under the impression that Matisse had not read the book, but contracts reveal that he only agreed to signed 250 copies (possibly because his failing eyesight made it too painful). The Artist and the Book 197; Slocum and Calhoun A22.
