Title: Journeys and Explorations in the Cotton Kingdom: A Traveler's Observations On Cotton and Slavery in the American Slave States. Author: Olmsted, Frederick Law Place: London Publisher: Sampson, Low, Son & Co. Date: 1862 Description: 2 volumes in 1. vii, [2], 376; iv, 404 pp. With folding map at front. (8vo) 18x12 cm (7x4½"), original blindstamped cloth, gilt spine. Second Edition. Scarce two volume abridgement of Olmsted's three earlier volumes: A Journey in the Seaboard Slave States (1856), A Journey Through Texas (1857), and A Journey in the Back Country in the Winter of 1853-4 (1860), which remain vivid first-person social documents of the pre-war South. This edition was published during the first six months of the American Civil War at the suggestion of Olmsted's English publisher. To this he wrote a new introduction (on "The Present Crisis") in which he stated explicitly his views on the effect of slavery on the economy and social conditions of the southern states. Lot Amendments Condition: Some wear and soiling to cloth with rubbing to extremities, fading to spine; folding map with some closed tears, one tear repaired with browned tape, foxing to endpapers; very good.
