Beschreibung:

Title: Journal of a Missionary Tour Through the Desert of Arabia to Bagdad Author: Samuel, Jacob Place: Edinburgh Publisher: Maclachlan, Stewart, & Co. Date: 1844 Description: [4], xiv, (3)-323, [1] pp. (12mo) 19.6x12.3 cm. (7¾x4¾") original blindstamped brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First and only edition. Scarce narrative of a Jewish missionary to India, Arabia, and Baghdad. Samuel was actually a British convert to Christianity and his trip was intended to explore the possibilities of bringing Middle Eastern Jews and Muslims into the Christian fold. But the Jewish communities he visited were at first unaware of his intentions and so gave him a cordial reception - which provided Samuel with an early 19th century view of Jewish congregations in India, Arabia and Iraq not recorded by other western travelers. A scarce title, only one copy appearing in the auction records for at least 30 years. Lot Amendments Condition: Light wear and fading to binding; an occasional spot of foxing; near fine. Item number: 222795
