Josephus F., "The works of Flavious Josephus translated from the original Greek", London, 1733. English edition. Folio 35x24cm, contemporary full calf leather rubbed, upper joint partly split but hold firmly, 10 engraved, mostly folded plates and maps, 978p., map of Jerusalem slightly chipped at folds, map of Holy Land with very small marginal tear, overall very good copy. Flavius Josephus (37101) was a Roman historian of Jewish origin. The works of Josephus, written in Greek, provide unique material for the early Roman period in the Levant. He focused in the RomanJewish wars and the situation of Jews, but gives in his works a very detailed picture of all the Levant areas during early Roman period. The work had been translated in English only in the 17th century, but had become even earlier, a very standard work of Judaica. A richly illustrated edition with views and maps. Still a precious reference, in an elegant early 18th century edition.
