JONES, W. & S., LONDON, 1802/7] THE NEW TWELVE INCH BRITISH Terrestrial Globe, REPRESENTING THE ACCURATE POSITIONS OF THE PRINCIPAL KNOWN PLACES OF THE EARTH FROM THE DISCOVERIES OF CAPTAIN COOK AND SUBSEQUENT CIRCUMNAVIGATORS TO THE PRESENT PERIOD 1802 .. with Additions to 1807 an appled cartouche at the bottom of the trade label reading W. & S. Jones Holborn London A 30.5cm. diameter terrestrial table globe made up of twelve coloured engrave gores and two polar calottes, the equatorial graduated in degrees and hours in both directions, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with symbols, the oceans with an analemma and showing the tracks of numerous exploraotory expeditions such as those of the Resolution going to Kamtchatka in 1779 , Capt n. Cook going to America in 1778 and Cap. Cook going out 1772 , the continents outlined in green and showing numerous details such as mountains, rivers, deserts, oases, towns, cities and caravan routes ( some very neat redrawing, neatly repaired crack over North America, other areas of discolouration ) with printed hour ring at the South Pole and engraved brass hour ring at the north pole, with engraved brass meridian circle, the hand-coloured engraved paper horizon ring graduated in degrees in both directions, days of the houses of the Zodiac with names and symbols and days of the month with names, also showing compass directions and annotation for THE EQUATION OF TIME , with red painted rim, supprted by three baluster turned and fluted mahogany legs united by cross stretchers 47cm. high As was common contempraneous practice, this globe was not made but only sold by W. & S. Jones, of Holborn, London, in 1807 or therabouts. Their applied cartouche would be pasted over the maker's name, in this case probably one of the big English globe makers of the period such as Newton, Cary or Malby, although in this case on close inspection it would appear that this globe did not originate from the workshops of any of those three eminent globe manufacturers.
