JONES, Inigo (1573-1652) and William KENT (1684-1748). Some Designs . London: John Vardy 1744. 2 (412 x 264mm). Engraved throughout, comprising engraved title and 2pp. 'Table of the Several Plates', and 54 engravings on 53 leaves, by Vardy after Jones and Kent. (First and last leaves very lightly discoloured.) 18th-century mottled calf (rebacked retaining original backstrip, corners restored). Provenance : Robert Shafto (armorial bookplate); William Adair (armorial bookplate); Francis Johnson (ownership inscription in ink on rear pastedown). FIRST EDITION. 'A tribute ... to Kent's innovative genius' (Harris p. 457). This work helped to establish Vardy (d. 1768) on his architectural career, which included building the Horse Guards and remodelling Hackwood Park. Vardy was very much a follower of Kent's taste and style, and the present work reflects this interest and the enormous contribution made by Kent to the design of furniture and decorative objects. The first seventeen plates illustrate designs of Jones and serve as an introduction to Kent's work. Harris 881; not in Fowler.
