Jonathan Meese Noël Coward is Back XXI (Tintenfisch und Pilzsuppe) 2005-2006 Oil and photo collage on canvas. 82 1/2 x 54 7/8 in. (209.6 x139.5 cm). Initialed and dated “JM 2005” on face; Signed, titled and dated “JMeese 06 Noël Coward is Back XXI (Tintenfisch und Pilzsuppe)” on the reverse.
Provenance Contemporary Fine Arts, Berlin Catalogue Essay Since his first show in 1998, Jonathan Meese has been exploiting cultural taboos: drawing inspiration from German Expressionism, a movement coined by the horrors of war and social discontent, Meese is known as a self-proclaimed cultural exorcist and cult figure. Meese creates his own universe, detached from the norm. To him, “art is born but then it’s totally independent. It does what it wants to do,” (Jonathan Meese in conversation with Helene Nyborg Andersen for the Statens Museum for Kunst X-rummet, October 12, 2005) consequently creating its very own laws and rules.
