"Twenty-Six Havana Gasoline Stations" portfolio. 2008. 26 chromogenic prints. Each circa 15,3 x 15,3 cm (25,3 x 20,2 cm). Each signed, editioned and dated by the photographer in black ink on the verso. In original navy linen clamshell case (27,5 x 21,7 cm) with light blue stamped title on front cover, title page, each with archival protective cover sheet. Limited edition of 7 and 2 artist proofs. New York 2008. In his work Charles Johnstone has been influenced by the American "New Topographics" photographers of the 1970s, whose reserved approach to the urban landscape changed the way it was perceived, as well as the conceptual artist Ed Ruscha He has also long been an admirer of Luigi Ghirri particularly in his use of color. The portfolio offered here playfully refers to Ed Ruscha's series Twentysix Gasoline Stations taken in 1962 and first published in 1963. On his various trips to Havana Johnstone was inspired by the city with its colorful and worn facades. For this project he depicted an array of gasoline stations full of character with a sense of a lingering past. – In excellent condition with bright colors.
