Bindings rubbed, restored at joints, some plates at the end of the first volume loose at the guards or creased by misfolding, a small marginal ink stain towards the end of the first volume, marginal repair to the second title, 1772 ownership inscription to the first. Johnson contributed a fine preface to this work (I, ix-xxxi) and also The Vision of Theodore the Hermit of Teneriffe..., (II, 516-526), which (according to Boswell) Johnson said was the best thing he ever wrote (Boswell Life I, 192).
