JOHNSON, SAMUEL] The Preceptor: Containing a General Course of Education. Wherein the First Principles of Polite Learning are Laid Down in a Way Most Suitable for Trying the Genius, and Advancing the Instruction of Youth . London: R. Dodsley, 1748. First edition, with the first issue points. Two volumes, period calf. [2], xxi, [1], 384 pp.; [2], 556, [2] pp., both volumes with frontispieces, 33 other engraved plates including six hand-colored maps, complete with the approbation leaf at the beginning of the first volume, and the advertisement at the end of the second. Bindings rubbed, restored at joints, some plates at the end of the first volume loose at the guards or creased by misfolding, a small marginal ink stain towards the end of the first volume, marginal repair to the second title, 1772 ownership inscription to the first. Johnson contributed a fine preface to this work (I, ix-xxxi) and also The Vision of Theodore the Hermit of Teneriffe..., (II, 516-526), which (according to Boswell) Johnson said was the best thing he ever wrote (Boswell Life I, 192).
