JOHNSON, ANDREW, 1808-1875, President . Partly printed document signed ("Andrew Johnson") as President, Washington, D.C., 20 September 1866. 2 pages, large folio, very large engraved text, accomplished in manuscript, with original papered seal . In very good condition. A PARDON FOR A CONFEDERATE NAMED LEE President Johnson pardons a rebel: "Whereas, L.L. Lee, by taking part in the late rebellion against the Government of the United States, has made himself liable to heavy pains and penalties; And whereas, the circumstances of his case render him a proper object of Executive clemency; Now, therefore, be it known that I, Andrew Johnson...do hereby grant...a full pardon and amnesty for all offences by him committed...This pardon to be of no effect until the said L.L. Lee shall take the oath prescribed in the Proclamation of the President...To be void and of no effect if the said L.L. Lee, shall hereafter, at any time, acquire any property whatever in slaves, or make use of slave labor..." The identity of the Lee here pardoned is unknown.
