Beschreibung:

A collection of manuscripts and photographs relating to the immediate family of outlaw Johnny Ringo: 1. RINGO, MARY. Autograph Manuscript Signed ("Mary Ringo") in pencil, an overland journal of the Ringo family's migration from Missouri to California, 72 pp recto and verso, 12mo, May 18 to October 7, 1864, housed in brown leather journal with tab, some smudging to pages, spine broken, wear to album. Includes the report of the accidental death of Johnny Ringo's father from a gunshot wound to the head. From Saturday, July 30: "And now Oh God comes the sadest record of my life for this day my husband accidentally shot him self and was buried by the wayside and oh my heart is breaking if I had no children how glad would I lay me down with my dead, but now I pray for strength to rais our precious children and oh may no one ever suffer the anguish that is breaking my heart...." 2. Pocket photo album with CDV portraits identified as Mary Ringo, Albert Ringo (Johnny's brother) and Aunt Martha (Mary Ringo's twin), as well as a calling card for Mrs. Frank M. Jackson, in black leather tabbed album, stains to upper margins (bloodstains?). 3. 2 19th century playing cards used as targets, each 2 ¾ x 4 inches, heavily thumbed. 4. Photography, including cased images of Ringo's grandfather JOHN PETERS (daguerreotype) and sister Fanny (ambrotype); albumen print cabinet card images of FANNY RINGO (3); MATTIE RINGO CUSHING, FRANK M. JACKSON (Fanny's husband), GERTIE SCOTT, SAM MATTHEWS, THE JACKSON FAMILY HOMESTEAD AND RANCH, and an imperial albumen print of "Cowboys going to dinner" and cowboys on horseback. With other miscellaneous images of more distant relatives. Provenance: Fanny Ringo; by descent to Frank Ringo Jackson—Ms. Prigmore—Donald Wilson; sold to Allen Erwin, author of study on Johnny Ringo; by descent to Ms. Frances Huffstadler; sold to Jim and Theresa Earle. According to the family, the bloodstained photo album was on Johnny Ringo's person when he was killed (see Wilson, The Peacemakers). When it was returned to his sister, it joined the other family items, including the overland journal of their mother Mary Ringo, and the various family photographs included in this lot. The two playing cards used as targets may have been shot by Johnny Ringo. The Jackson family moved in well-to-do circles in Los Gatos, and seem unlikely to have engaged in that sort of behavior, and were very reticent in discussing their relative.
