Contemporary (original?) red morocco-backed green cloth, spine lettered in gilt 'Lewin's Birds of New Holland' (light scuffing to extremities). Provenance : Paschal P. Pope (early signature); Dr. Evan Morton Evans (sale, Parke-Bernet, New York, 6-7 December 1955, lot 300); H. Bradley Martin (bookplate, sale, Sotheby's, New York, 7 June 1989, lot 147). THE BRADLEY MARTIN COPY. THIRD EDITION, SECOND (AND BEST) ISSUE. The first and second editions of this landmark work were published between 1808 and 1813 in London and Sydney respectively. After Lewin's death in 1819, his widow returned to England and arranged for the publication of the third edition by J.H. Bohte in 1822: the first to contain the full complement of plates. The present second issue of the third edition edition includes the text and contents-list printed for Bohte with a new title leaf and conjugate index of synonymes. The plates were reprinted and carefully coloured using specimens lent by John Gould. The nomenclature was overseen by Thomas Campbell Eyton.
