JOHN LILLYWHITE Cricketers' Companion London: John Lillywhite [later John and James Lillywhite, and James Lillywhite], 1865-85. 21 volumes in 7, 8vo., 1865-66 with title vignettes, 1865-1867 and 1872 with wood-engraved illustrations, diagrams throughout, errata slip in 1878 (occasional spotting, some numerals cropped), late 19th-century green half calf (skillfully rebacked, old spines relaid, preserving many advertisement leaves but without wrappers). Provenance : Robert Stratten Holmes (signature on front endpapers and on the titles of fourteen vols., in some cases cropped by the binder; note in his hand on p. 111 of 1881) -- G.B. Buckley (bookplate). A COMPLETE SET IN FINE CONDITION. Lacking the wrappers but, as R.S. Holmes' and G.B. Buckley's set, one long united and with a highly distinguished provenance. John Lillywhite was editor from 1865 until his death in 1874; the final vols. were edited by Edgar S. Pardon. In Derek West's words, the Companion provides "a gold-mine of information on club cricket" and "a veritable mine of invaluable information on the doings of the first-class counties" as well as a regular review of the season which is "of pre-eminent importance for a knowledge of the history of the game" ( Guide to Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion , 1995, pp. 17-20). Allen 56; Padwick 1088.
