John Howard (1726-1790) was a pioneering British philanthropist and prison reformer whose contributions shaped modern public health and penal systems. Howard’s travels across Europe and the Ottoman Empire were driven by his mission to improve the appalling conditions in prisons and hospitals. His meticulous reports documented overcrowding, poor hygiene, and a lack of medical care in prisons, linking these factors to the spread of typhus and other diseases. His groundbreaking work, The State of the Prisons in England and Wales (1777), brought widespread attention to the systemic failings in the treatment of inmates and inspired major reforms in prison management, public health, and social justice. Howard’s relentless advocacy earned him recognition as the first English prison reformer and a revered figure in humanitarian efforts.
Book Description:
The first edition of An Account of the Principal Lazarettos in Europe (1789) is a cornerstone in public health and penal reform literature. This volume encapsulates Howard’s observations on European lazarettos (quarantine stations), foreign prisons, and hospitals, providing a detailed account of their management, facilities, and hygiene standards. With twenty-two folding or double-page plates, the book illustrates layouts and designs for effective containment of infectious diseases, such as the plague, and improved prison conditions.
Howard’s work reflects his innovative recommendations, including smooth, cleanable flooring, clothing sanitation ovens, daily baths, and medical staff for prisons and hospitals. His insights into the correlation between space allocation and mortality rates were instrumental in addressing typhus outbreaks, contributing significantly to public health reforms. This copy, professionally rebound in half-leather with marbled boards and a morocco label, shows light spotting and browning, with expertly repaired tears.
Along with a copy of Loimographia an account of the great plage of London in the year 1665 By William Boghurst, 1894, with manuscript dedication from the author to the Library of the Royal Medial & Surgical Library
