JOHN HEYWOOD, publisher The Cricketer's Guide: A Complete Manual of the Game of Cricket Manchester: John Heywood [1879], 1882, [1889?], [1890?], [post 1894]. Five editions in 2 vols., 8vo., one advertisement leaf at end of each issue, except for 1894 which has 3 advertisment leaves, wood-engraved illustrations, diagrams (1879 with fold mark, spotting in post 1894 edition), 1879 in original wrappers (two small adhesive tape repairs to front wrapper), the remaining editions in black buckram, original wrappers all bound in. Provenance : Robert Stratten Holmes (inscription on front wrapper of 1890 dated Liverpool, 10.7.[18]90) -- R.N. Jones (signature repeated in bound set). MOST COPIES IN MINT CONDITION. Three editions have the figures of three batsman and a bowler united in one full-page illustration, but in two editions (1889 and post-1894) the four figures are differently drawn and interspersed in the text. Only the two earliest editions have pictorial wrappers (see above). This guide appeared intermittenly over a long period, Padwick 376, dating the first issue 1863 and the last 1896. (2)
