JOHN GOULD (1804-1881) and RICHARD BOWDLER SHARPE (1847-1909) A Monograph of the Trochilidae or Family of Humming-Birds ... completed after the author's death by R. Bowdler Sharpe. Supplement . London: Henry Sotheran, [1880-] 1887. Supplement volume only, 2 (548 x 370mm). 58 lithographed plates, coloured in a later hand and overpainted with transparent varnish and oil colours, by and after Gould and W. Hart printed by Mintern Brothers, leaf with "Binding Notice" for the supplement and advertisement for "The Birds of New Guinea" bound in at end. (Text leaf describing "Microchera Parvirostris/The Purple Snowcap" with slight tear at outer margin.) Contemporary dark green morocco gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (neatly rebacked, inner hinges strengthened). FIRST EDITION OF THE SUPPLEMENT. Gould's entire work was published in 25 parts (vols. I-V, 1849-1861), plus a 5-part supplement (vol. VI, 1880-87). He died on 3rd February 1881 having prepared the second part of the supplement for publication; the remaining parts were completed by Richard Bowdler Sharpe (text) and William Hart (plates), and published by Henry Sotheran and Co. who purchased the publication rights to Gould's works, along with other items of the estate. The supplement illustrated a total of 60 species on 58 plates, equal in beauty and magnificence with the 360 plates already issued.
