John Cowell, Governor to Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh Three autograph letters signed, to his mother describing his tour of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, his plan "for the purchase of a few acres to call my own" outside Bethlehem, his uncertainty about when he will return to England ("...think it more than probable that the Queen may wish to see P.A. before he is many months older..."), and family subjects, 12 pages, 8vo, Jerusalem, "Camp on the border of the Sea of Galilee", and HMS Euryalus, 38 March to 14 April 1859 [with:] ink and wash views of the Holy Land, seven sketches on 4 pages, 8vo [also with:] five paper envelopes containing olive leaves, each labelled with a date and note recording their origin at different locations in the Holy Land John Clayton Cowell (1832-94) was governor to Queen Victoria's second son, Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, from 1856-66. These letters were written during a brief tour of the Holy Land during the fourteen year old prince's first tour of duty in the navy on board HMS Euryalus, which lasted until August 1861.
