John Callcott Horsley RA (English, 1817-1903). Oil on canvas painting titled "The New Dress" (1864) depicting an interior scene with a young girl showing off her brand new dress to an older, seated woman. A dog peaks out from under the table and a cat sleeps peacefully on a cushion nearby. In the background through an open doorway, a mule can be seen being led away by a young man. Signed and dated along the lower right. Along the verso there are several labels including one from the Alexandra Palace of Art & Industry. There are two labels from Kurt E. Schon Ltd. Fine Art. There is an additional label detailing the artwork's history. Exhibition: Alexandra Palace of Art & Industry, ca. 1864; Royal Academy of Art, London, 1864. Framed; height: 42 1/4 in x width: 51 1/2 in. Condition Request Condition Report The painting has been relined. There is craquelure throughout the work. Along the upper right margin there is a network of small paint losses; visible in the lot listing. When inspected under UV light there appear to be small restorations and inpainting throughout. Just above the sleeping cat there appears to be a repaired tear measuring approx. 3 inches in length. Inpainting visible along all the figures. Due to a thick varnish it is difficult to determine exactly the extent of the restorations. Major losses to the gilt frame along the edges. The edges are not stable which may result in further losses. Many of the pieces that have broken off are included with the artwork but not attached.
