John Brewster Jr. (American, 1766-1854) Pair of Portraits of Lydia Singer Newhall and Samuel Pratt Newhall. Unsigned. Oil on panel, the portraits possibly painted at the time of their wedding which took place in 1814, 22 x 15 3/4 in., in period molded giltwood frames. Condition: Good, stable craquelure. Note: According to History of the Early Settlement of Bridgewater [Massachusetts] in Plymouth County by Nahum Mitchell, published by Edward Alden, Bridgewater, Massachusetts, 1897, p. 259, Samuel Pratt Newhall, brother of William (who came from Charlestown, Massachusetts) married Lydia Singer of Salem [Massachusetts], on March 26, 1814. They had one child, Rebecca Turner, b. August 5, 1816.
