Beschreibung:

Johannes Kahrs O.T. (Schmerz) 1994-1996 Oil on canvas. 43 3/4 x 65 in. (111 x 165 cm). Signed, titled and dated "J. Kahrs Schmerz 1994-1996" on the reverse.
Provenance Private collection, Germany Exhibited Berlin, Arndt & Partner, Storytellers, May 10 - June 21, 1997; Berlin, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, The Cinema Project, September 1 - October 22, 1998; Istanbul, Borusan Art & Culture Center, Double-Trouble, March 9 - March 31, 2000. Literature Arndt & Partner, Storytellers, Berlin, 1997, p.26 (illustrated); Borusan Art & Culture Center, eds., Double-Trouble, Borusan, 2001, p. 26 (illustrated) Catalogue Essay Kahrs brings into play an iconography born in the mass media, itself a typically twentieth-century phenomenon. Frequently images from newspapers, cinema, television appear blurred, out of focus, as though floating in that hazy fog that is characteristic of memory. Science fiction has already evoked the artificial implantation of memories, their 'manufacturability', their possible manipulation....Kahrs is an artist more concerned with temporality than with the plausibility of the image. Thus his work tends to recognize the impact of printed matter, the great psychological power of cinema (as a production of pure fiction and poetry in the best cases) and the mass media as a receptacle of the temporal distance between that which i is directly perceived, a physical impression, and that which is imagined, a sheer construction of our capacity to transform.
