Koekkoek was the third son of marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek (1815-1882) and, as his brothers, was trained by his father. The influence of his father is apparent in the carefull romantic style of painting and the fine details of his early sea- and river views. Later on, after his move to Hilversum in the Het Gooi region in 1864, the birthplace of the 'Larense school', he switched to painting in a looser style. He subsequently specialised in the painting of beach scenes with barges in a style influenced by the 'The Hague School'. He also painted river views, scenes from the lives of fishermen, landscapes, genre scenes and even the odd cityscape. Jan H.B. Koekkoek in his turn was the teacher of his son Gerardus Johannes Koekkoek (1871-1956). He also was a member of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam. His works are in the collections of various museums, including the Museum Jan Cunen in Oss and the Rijksprentenkabinet in Amsterdam.
