Attractive copy of an abundantly illustrated edition of ‘the celebrated and remarkable travels from Persia to the East Indies of Mr. Jean-Albert de Mandelslo’(Lust). Mandelslo accompanied the ambassador from the court of the duke of Holstein on his mission to the courts of Russia and Persia. He returned to Germany via India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and the Cape of Good Hope in 1640. His account of his travels was first edited and published by Adam Olearius in Schleswig in 1645. This translation originally appeared as the second part of Relation du voyage d’Adam Olearius en Moscovie, Tartarie et Perse. ... Augmentée de plus d'un tiers,& particulierement d'une seconde partie contenant le Voyage de Jean-Albert de Mandelslo (Paris, 1659, and Leiden, P. van der Aa, 1719). The present edition consists of the same sheets as the Leiden, 1719 edition with a new title page. ‘The French translation of 1719 contain[s] material not found in the original German’ (Cox, p. 271). Cordier Japonica, 367-68; Lust 342; Weber 298; see Querard V, pp. 485-86. 2 parts in one volume, folio (313 x 197mm). Half-titles, titles printed in red and black, engraved portrait of the author, 44 plans, views and maps (some double-page and folding) and 19 engraved illustrations in text (lacking engraved additional title, some light browning and very occasional spotting). Contemporary calf, spine gilt, red and green morocco spine labels lettered in gilt (expert repairs to corners and joints). Please note this lot is the property of a private individual.
