JODOCUS HONDIUS (1563-1612) AND PIETER VAN DEN KEERE (1571-AFTER 1646)
JODOCUS HONDIUS (1563-1612) AND PIETER VAN DEN KEERE (1571-AFTER 1646) [ Thrésor de Chartes, contenat les tableaux de tous les pays du monde. The Hague: Albert Hendricks for Cornelis Claesz, c.1600]. 2 volumes in one, oblong 8º (160 x 116mm). 169 miniature maps and plates engraved by Hondius and van den Keere. (Lacks title and all 16pp. of text before p. 1, world map on p. 1 worn and tattered and holed at margins, map of the Duchy of Burgundy originally printed upside down and with a second copy overlaid, some lower corners creased, maps of Normandy p. 137 and of the Holy Land p.23 (vol. 2) torn at lower corner.) Contemporary vellum with manuscript title on spine (upper joints split, lacking ties). Early edition of this celebrated miniature atlas, probably first printed in 1597 although no copies of that edition survive. Van der Krogt states that ‘the contents reflect the level of cartography in Amsterdam at the turn of the century, where up-to-date information on newly discovered regions was readily available.’ The original text, thought to be by Cornelis Taemsz. van Hoorn (c.1567-1600), is used in I. de la Haye’s French translation; Petrus Bertius published his revision in the same year. Van der Krogt IIIA, 341:11.
