[Jodocus Crull], The Present condition of the Muscovite empire till the year 1699 in two letters: the first from a gentleman who was conversant with the Muscovite ambassadour in Holland, the second from a person of quality at Vienna, concerning the late Muscovite embassy, his present czarish majesty, the Russian empire and Great-Tartary : with the life of the present Emperour of China, by Father J. Bouvet, missionary by the author of The antient and present state of Muscovy, 2 parts in one volume, 8vo, calf, 18x11.5cm. Crull's translation of these two letters, following his own Antient and Present state of Muscovy was first published in 1698. Joachim Bouvet's life of the Emperor Kangxi was first published in French in 1698. Bouvet (1656-1730) was one of the first Jesuit missionaries to be sent to China by Louis XIV. He arrived in Beijing in 1687 and, with Father Gerbillion, was appointed by the Emperor Kangxi as his tutor in mathematics.
