Joachim Bouvet's life of the Emperor Kangxi was first published in French in 1698. Bouvet (1656-1730) was one of the first Jesuit missionaries to be sent to China by Louis XIV. He arrived in Beijing in 1687 and, with Father Gerbillion, was appointed by the Emperor Kangxi as his tutor in mathematics.
