Jim Thorpe’s Prayer Book Blessed By Pope Pius X During The 1913 World Tour With The Giants From the winter of 1913 into the spring of 1914, the New York Giants and the Chicago White Sox took a trip around the world in an effort to internationally spread the baseball gospel. Organized by the two team owners, Charles Comiskey and John McGraw, the players barnstormed across the United States then sailed to Asia, the Middle East and Europe included Christy Mathewson and a half dozen future Hall of Famers. However, the Tour's star attraction was the Giants newly signed ballplayer, the most famous athlete in the world, Jim Thorpe. This would be the first international trip for Thorpe after he was unceremoniously stripped of the medals that he won during the recently completed 1912 Olympics. The public was aghast when in 1913 the United States Olympic Committee took Thorpe's medals from him ruling that his amateur status was tainted when he admitted being paid "as a professional" after newspapers reported that he had played minor league baseball prior to the Olympics for a meager $30 a month. Americans and Europeans alike knew that the Native American had been given a raw deal and the huge crowds that followed Thorpe everywhere on the Tour treated him like royalty. The trip itself was also important in the athlete's personal life as well, for it served as the honeymoon for him and his first wife, Iva. On the morning of February 11, 1914 the players had a private audience with Pope Pius X at the Vatican. It was later reported that upon entering the elegant room where the players nervously waited, the Pope initially gave the benediction to the awe struck Americans and then offered to bless them individually and also any religious articles that they had with them. Now more than 90 years after this extraordinary meeting we offer Jim Thorpe's personal Prayer Book that was blessed by Pope Pius X during the Tours extraordinary meeting in Rome. The Prayer Book itself is titled "Garden Of The Soul" and there is hand writing (possibly Thorpes) in the inset page opposite a photo of the Pope himself, that reads "Blessed by the Pope Pius X Feb 11, 1914, Worlds Tour." The 380 page book is numbered 497 and measures 3" by 4 3/4". The book is in excellent shape, all pages are secure and in tact, with some minimal staining on the back canvas like cover. Includes an LOA from the family of Jim Thorpe.
