JEWELL, John (1522-1571). The Works ... And a brief discourse of his life [by Daniel Featley]. London: [Eliot's Court Press for] John Norton 1609. 4 parts in one volume, 2° in 6's (299 x 210mm). Woodcut title border, a crowned arch with lamp above, and at sides pillars twined with grapes, the border repeated on part titles [McKerrow and Ferguson 250]. Woodcut ornaments. (Occasional stains and soil marks, a few leaves slightly greyed, creases and light waterstains towards end.) CHAINED BINDING of contemporary calf over pasteboard, panelled in blind, plain spine with raised bands, iron chain (550mm.) with lock attached (slightly rubbed and scuffed), modern morocco box. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. John Jewell, bishop of Salisbury from 1560 to his death, was deeply involved in the religious controversies of his age but ultimately identified himself with Anglicanism and opposed the puritans. He built the cathedral library at Salisbury. According to DNB (X, p. 817), 'the great interest' attached to his writings is 'the insight which they give into the process by which the anglican system was established on a logical basis.' STC 14579.
