Engraved document signed ("Th:Jefferson") as President, Washington, D.C., 3 March 1809. 1 page, large folio, ON PARCHMENT, attractively engraved with large American eagle at the top, calligraphic text headed "President of the United States of America," and at the bottom, an arrangement of flags, cannons, anchors and naval paraphenalia, "Designed and engraved by Akin & Harrison Junr.," papered seal of the United States at bottom center, accomplished in manuscript, minor browning at folds and edges. A RARE NAVAL SURGEON'S APPOINTMENT. Jefferson appoints Henry Fackler "a Surgeon in the Navy"; he is "to observe and follow such Orders and Directions...as he shall receive from me or the future President...or his superior Officer...according to the rules and discipline of the Navy..." An uncommon form of appointment.
