One page, an oblong, 125 x 199mm. (4 7/8 x 7 3/4in.), dampstains (not affecting the ink), laid down on a sheet of nineteenth-century paper. JEFFERSON AND THE POLISH FRIEND OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE, KO/ASCIUZKO A highly unusual cashier's note which links Jefferson to his former colleague of Revolutionary days, General Thaddeus Ko/asciuzko, a Polish officer who served with distinction in the Continental Army. As Ko/asciuzko's attorney, the former President directs the bank cashier to "Be pleased to have paiment [ sic ] made to John Barnes or order of all dividends which shall become due on the 1st day of July ensuing for the shares of stock held by Genl. Thaddeus Kosciuzko in the Bank of Pennsylvania, for which this shall be your sufficient voucher...." Tadeusz Ko/asciusko (1746-1817) had studied both artillery and philosophy in France. Borrowing money for his passage, he came to America at the beginning of the Revolution and was commissioned by Pennsylvania to design its Delaware River forts. Commissioned a Colonel in the Continental Army, he served with Gates at Saratoga ("his selection and fortification of the Saratoga battlefield made possible the American victory that marked the turning point of the war" (-Boatner). He designed the important fortifications at West Point and was later chief Engineer in the Southern Department under Greene, where he spent the remainder of the war. He returned to Poland in July 1784 and became active in the movement for Polish independence. In 1798, after revisiting America, Ko/siciuzko drew up a will authorizing Jefferson to liquidate the whole of his American property and use the proceeds to purchase, free and educate black slaves. When that will was proved in 1819, the elderly Jefferson declined to take on the burden of its execution (see D. Malone, Jefferson and the Ordeal of Liberty , p.452.
