JEFFERSON, Thomas. Notes on the State of Virginia... London: Printed for John Stockdale, 1787. 8 o. Woodcut and several tables in text and large folding engraved map (approx. 604 x 614 mm., hand-colored in outline in four colors). 19th-century half-calf and marbled boards, spine gilt (spine worn, boards detached but present). An internally clean and well-margined copy. FIRST LONDON EDITION preceded by the extremely rare Paris edition of 1782 and an imperfect French translation four years later (Paris, 1786). Copies often lack the map (derived from a Fry and Jefferson map of 1751 with additions) that Jefferson considered of extreme importance given its topographical detail of the Ohio Valley. Church 1189 (first edition); Phillips, Maps of America , p. 984; Sabin 35896.
