J.") to Albert Gallatin Secretary of the Treasury, responding to a prior letter from Gallatin regarding the appointment of Eli Vickery as Keeper of the Lighthouse at Old Point Comfort, Virginia, n.d. [February 14, 1804], 1 p, 104 x 245 mm, annotated and initialed in Gallatin's hand below that of Jefferson, with endorsement and date on verso in another hand. Creases, light browning, hinges adhered to upper corners on verso, framed.

JEFFERSON ON THE APPOINTMENT OF ELI VICKERY AS THE FIRST KEEPER OF THE OLDPOINT COMFORT LIGHTHOUSE, which would become known as Fort Monroe. Jefferson writes simply to Gallatin "Eli Vickery lives at Norfolk. If the letter be addressed to the care of Col. Tho. Newton, it will be handed him." Gallatin, in turn, writes an explanatory addendum to the note stating "Eli Vickery is appd. keeper of the lighthouse at Old Point Comfort—his salary the same as for Smith's Point—Mr. S the collector at Norfolk to be Notified" directed to "Wm Brown revenue office" at the bottom, and initialed by Gallatin. Jefferson had written earlier of Vickery, "Among the candidates for the light-house at Old Point Comfort, Captain Eli Vickery seems decidedly the best...
