Jean Beraud was Russian born French painter of the Belle Epoque period best known for his paintings of Parisian life. After his father's death the family moved to Paris, where Beraud become a student of Leon Bonnat. By 1872, he was exhibiting in the Paris Salon. His art often included "truth-based" humor and included religious figures in contemporary Parisian settings. In a 1906 article titled "Modernizing Jesus of Nazareth", the writer describes "The artist painted as a sequel to the 'Magdalen in the House of the Pharisee', 'The Descent from the Cross', which, on account of its more reverential spirit is less jarringly rendered." The article further states that in this composition, Beraud transfers Calvary to the walls outside Montmarte. Christ is surrounded by Parisians of the humble class, with Peter standing with fist clenched over the wicked city that has put his master to such a cruel death. The sailor in the foreground is John and the man lowering Jesus in front of the cross is Nicodemus. The work bears a frame presentation plaque with the incorrect title "Crucifixion." An engraving of Baraud's painting was created in 1893. Literature: John Powell Lenox. "Modernizing Jesus of Nazareth", The World Today, Vol. 10, January, 1906, p. 523-524. This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made. Item Dimensions: Framed: 55 - 1/2" x 69" x 4".
