Philadelphia: John Fenno, Wednesday, August 28, 1793 Large folio, 4 pages (17 1/2 x 10 1/4 in.; 448 x 262 mm) on a full sheet of laid paper, text in four columns; lightly browned, creased, tiny loss at intersecting central folds. The consignor has independently obtained a letter of authenticity from PSA that will accompany the lot. John Jay's copy of an issue of the Gazette of the United States from his tenure as first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, with his subscriber's name written in the top margin of the first page: "Hon: Jno. Jay." In addition to printing some official presidential correspondence of George Washington, this issue features on its front page a portion of Helvidius No. 1—James Madison's first retort to Alexander Hamilton's Pacificus in their debate about the President's Proclamation of Neutrality. At the head of page 3 is a manuscript notation, "Fr. Consul—20. Aug. Meetings on Proclamation of Neutrality 1793."Condition ReportCondition as described in catalogue entry.
