JARVIS, Samuel Farmer, Rev. -- Joseph SABIN. Catalogue of the Entire Library of the late Rev. Samuel Farmer Jarvis... of Middletown, Conn. New York: Lyman & Rawdon, 4 November 1851. 8 o (228 x 153 mm). Original printed wrappers (few chips, joints partly split). Provenance : Boston, New England Historic-Genealogical Society (inkstamp on title). THIS IS THE FIRST CATALOGUE KNOWN TO HAVE BEEN COMPILED BY JOSEPH SABIN, then thirty years old, and the first sale of the new auction house of Lyman & Rawdon. Of particular interest are the four hundred volumes from the library of Edward Gibbon which came from his Lausanne library, sold by his executor, Lord Sheffield, for £950 to William Beckford who, in turn, gave them to his physician, Dr. Frederic Schöll in Lausanne. The prefatory Notice to the catalogue describes Jarvis's library as "perhaps the most valuable private collection in this country. It contains about 10,000 volumes, most of which were obtained by him during his long residence abroad."
