With original mounted albumen photograph of Kamehameha V as frontispiece; woodcut illustrations in the text, 2 of them full page; full-page woodcut map. 23.3x14.3 cm (9¼x5½"), original half leather & cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Fourth Edition. The fourth, revised, edition of Jarves' important history, first published in 1843 in Boston; this is the second edition to be published in Hawaii, and is especially notable for the original albumen frontispiece portrait of a standing King Kamehameha V. This feature arguably makes it the most desirable, and most valuable, of all editions of the book. There is an appendix by the publisher, Henry Whitney, giving an overview of statistics and history that brings the work up to date of the year of publication.
