Jaroslav Herbst was born to a rural family in Dušník, Central Bohemia. He studied mechanical engineering and later civil engineering at a technical school in Prague; in 1912 he started painting as a self-taught artist. After World War I he returned to his family farm, where he farmed and painted completely isolated from the rest of the art world. Both "The Holy Family" and "Still Life with a Bouquet" are from the artist's successful exhibition in 1934.
