Japanese lacquer photograph album with mounted bone & mother of pearl relief images, presented by Mrs. Leland Stanford to her attorney Author: Place: Japan Publisher: Date: 1902 Description: With 50 hand-colored albumen photographs, mounted on both sides of 25 cardstock leaves, with protective interleaves. 27.5x36 cm (10¾x14¼"), polished lacquer wood covers painted in gold and colors, with two elaborate raised figures made of bone and mother of pearl, depictions of a Samurai warrior gazing back at a woman in kimono; leather spine. Spectacular lacquer album, presented by Mrs. Leland (Jane) Stanford, widowed some nine years earlier, to Russell J. Wilson, who was her attorney in the complex settlement of the Leland Stanford estate, which took over five years. She inscribes on the front free endpaper: "To my highly prized friend, Russell J. Wilson, Tokio Japan June 5th, 1902. From Mrs. Leland Stanford." Below that is a later inscription, evidently from Wilson's daughter, "To my dear son Orville C. Pratt IV, from his mother, Emily J. Wilson Pratt, Aug. 9th, 1946." The photographs within the album are quite nice, and none have been removed, mostly of temples, architecture, gardens, street scenes, Mt. Fuji, etc. Lot Amendments Condition: Lower corners of album chipped, crack to rear cover; light foxing to interleaves and some mount margins, at times slightly affecting images; near fine.
