Japan. "Iaponiae Insulae descriptio 1595". Kol. Kupferstich-Karte nach L. Teixeira (aus A. Ortelius). Mit 2 Rollwerkskartuschen, 3 Segelschiffen und ornament. Bordüre (jeweils ausgem.). 35,5:48 cm. Hubbard 6; Walter 19 mit Farbabb.; Cortazzi S. 24f. u. Abb. 25; Campbell 2 u. Taf. III; Broecke 165.1; Koeman III, 8450:31. - Aus der latein. Ausg. 1609 oder 1612. - Etwas gebräunt u. mit Bräunungsstreifen im ehemaligen Passepartoutausschnitt, Bug leicht leimschattig. "The first printed map of Japan to appear in an atlas. The map was to remain the standard form until replaced by the Martini map of 1655" (Campbell). "A new epoch in Western cartography of Japan begins with the inclusion of this map in the Theatrum. Finally characteristic of the type established by Texeira... is Korea's appearance as an island tapering to a point toward the south" (W.). From the Latin edition 1609 or 1612. - Col. in full. Some browning, stronger to margins due to former framing, light discolouration from paste at centerfold.
